Emergency Response & Relief

A humanitarian response in times of conflict or disaster binds us in our shared responsibility to each other.

Ukraine War Response & Relief

LSPFF supports efforts that will have large-scale impact, bringing immediate material aid and relief to Ukrainian citizens.

Our highest grant priorities include immediate evacuation, emotional support, food and housing for large numbers of people, as well as existing grantees that have on-the-ground capacity and knowledge, cultural and language competency, and local networks. We also fund organizations aiding Ukrainian Jews to evacuate to safety.

CARE

CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty by lifting up women and girls. The situation in Ukraine is now the largest humanitarian crisis in Europe since WWII. CARE has been working with local partners in Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, and Romania to provide vulnerable refugees and families trapped in conflict areas with urgent aid, including shelter, clean water and food, hygiene kits, medicines, and cash assistance. CARE is also supporting mental health services for traumatized families and children and gender-based-violence-focused interventions.

Joint Distribution Committee

Powered by a commitment to Jewish values, Joint Distribution Committee is the leading global Jewish humanitarian organization, providing lifesaving aid to poor and elderly Jews across the world. Ukraine holds a meaningful place in Jewish history, and its Jewish community – which includes many vulnerable Holocaust survivors – is one of the largest in the world. Right now, JDC is on the ground, providing unceasing aid to Jews in Ukraine and neighboring countries, delivering food, shelter, and other emergency assistance.

International Medical Corps

With a history of providing medical care and training in Ukraine that stretches back to 1999, International Medical Corps has responded to the recent Russian invasion by expanding its services throughout Ukraine and neighboring countries. It is providing healthcare through mobile teams, as well as medicines and medical supplies, and mental health services and training to help treat the unseen wounds of war. In addition, International Medical Corps provides protection services to people who typically are most vulnerable during times of conflict, and clean water, hygiene and sanitation services, as well as food, blankets and other necessities.

Covid Relief

The pandemic requires an urgent response for food, economic, and housing assistance for the most vulnerable.

LSPFF responded to the pandemic by joining local civic efforts to ensure employment stability, emotional support, food and housing assistance. We supported collective philanthropic initiatives making a viral impact in the area of economic security. Shoring up our grantees that lost tremendous revenue was as important as expediting and making nimble our grantmaking. We have been particularly grateful to organizations that are seizing this unprecedented moment to innovate their business and service delivery models for long term sustainability

Give2SF

Immediately after the onset of the pandemic, Mayor London Breed established Give2SF to ensure that San Francisco was financially equipped to provide shelter, food, critical supplies and urgent assistance to individuals, families, small businesses, and nonprofits. This support has helped individuals avert housing and food insecurity. It has enabled businesses to weather temporary closures. These funds have ensured that San Francisco’s most medically and economically vulnerable citizens are able to stay safe. In the midst of an unprecedented pandemic, Give2SF has ensured that neighbors are taking care of one another.

Hebrew Free Loan Association

HFLA is a Jewish community organization that springs into action when Jewish people need financial assistance, recognizing that the ability to be self-supporting is critical to an individual’s sense of self-worth and optimism. HFLA provides interest free loans and grants. Recipients are able to overcome financial challenges and pursue life dreams, and more than 99% repay the funds when they are able. During the pandemic, HFLA raised funds within the Jewish community to provide additional emergency loans, helping people people sustain their businesses and livelihoods.

YMCA

The YMCA sprung into action to support under-served children at the beginning of the pandemic. Leveraging its core competency in providing children with trusted connections to caring adults, and expanding its collaborative program with BookNook, a technology-based intervention for struggling readers, YMCA supported students at risk for falling behind due to school closures and the difficulties associated with distance learning. YMCA’s quick action ensured in-person, successful reading instruction to students throughout San Francisco’s community hubs.
